Any brand Vodka that is 40% alcohol (80 proof) will work for these instructions.

How To Make Super Zix

Super Zix is basically the old Zix formula with saw palmetto added to the brew. There is some good evidence that saw palmetto is effective at regrowing hair. There is not a great deal of research in this area because no pharmaceutical company can obtain a patent on the substance. Here's one article that discusses one of the studies.

Effect Of Topical Saw Palmetto

The problem with simply applying saw palmetto directly to the scalp is three fold. First it is an oil and dark in color. So unless you want to look like you just combed your hair with used motor oil I wouldn't recommend directly applying the stuff to your scalp. Also we need to get the saw palmetto into the follicle. This will require two additional substances. The first is an emulsifier which causes oil and water to mix and this facilitates penetration into the follicle. The second problem we face is that we need a good penetrant substance therefore we add vodka that contains 40% ethyl alcohol. So basically Super Zix is a brew that adds saw palmetto, an emulsifier (polysorbate 80) and a penetrant (ethyl alcohol) to the original zix formulation. Adding ethyl alcohol will also dramatically increase the absorption and penetration of both the zinc and the B-6. The brew is not that hard to make. It will cost alittle more but I am firmly convinced it is a significant improvment over the original Zix formula. Here's what you need:

1 container that is at least 8 ounces and has a cap that won't leak when you shake it up. 2 empty minoxidil containers with eyedropper. (2 oz each)

1 220 mg zinc sulfate capsule. (Each 220mg zinc sulfate capsule actually only contains 50mg of elemental zinc).

3 50mg b-6 capsules.

3 oz. (90mls) of distilled water. (Not spring water but distilled water). You can purchase at your local supermarket. It is very cheap.

1 oz (30 mls) of Vodka that is 40% ethyl alcohol.

A small amount of polysorbate 80. Do a search on Google for "Polysorbate 80". It will cost you about 10 bucks but it is a life time supply. I also have a supplier listed on the "places to purchase ingredients" page.

10 mls of liquid saw palmetto (500mgs per ml) I bought the "Purtitan's pride" brand from the same outfit I bought the polysorbate 80.

Add 3 oz (90 mls) of distilled water to 1 oz (30 mls) of 40% vodka to your large 8 ounce container. Then add the zinc, b-6 and 10 mls of the liquid saw palmetto. (The Puritan's Pride formulation comes with an eye dropper that measures mls). Then add 5 drops of the polysorbate 80. Close the container and shake well. Then pour the contents into both 2 ounce minoxidl (Rogaine) containers.

If you purchased the "Super Zix Kit" from my site it comes with pure zinc sulfate powder. This makes a cleaner solution because it has no binders or fillers that are in the capsules. With your zinc sulfate you also received two strange looking very small spoons. You really will only ever need one but I sent two in case you lose one or one breaks. You need to dump approximately 1 and 1/2 spoons full into the mix. Make sure you tap the spoon gently before assuming it is full. When dumping the contents of the spoon into your bottle make sure to again tap it several times to make sure you got all the zinc sulfate out of it. The vodka will serve as a penetrant (helps to get the ingredients into the follicles) and a preservative (prevent bacterial growth) however it will not stop the oxidation of the fats in the saw palmetto. To slow the "spoiling" of the saw palmetto I recommend making only enough of the formula to last 1 month.
How To Make An Azelaic Acid Solution Using Vodka

The exciting thing about adding azelaic acid to our topical treatments is that we are closely mimicking the same formula that has been demonstrated in vitro to reduce 5AR by 90% in very low concentrations. That's quite substantial and theoretically a topical formula that would do that would be better than Propecia at cutting DHT in the scalp. Propecia is believed to decrease scalp DHT by only 30 to 40 percent.

I've messed around with azelaic acid for some time now and I have found that whenever you simply add it to the zix formula it ends up ruining the entire thing. It's OK for a few days and then a preciptiate forms, rendering all the ingredients useless. I also wonder if this could be the very same reason why products such as Revivogen and Crinagen seem to have poor success record. Could the same thing that happens when I add azelaic acid to zix be happening with these commercial products as well? For this reason we mix the azelaic acid in a seperate solution . We apply it twice per day. We apply it first, then wait a minute or two, then apply the Super Zix.

There are some hair loss remedies that contain a 5% solution of azelaic acid. One of the more famous is a product sold by Dr Lee called Xandrox. I have always believed this product was effective but ridiculously priced. So that's where I got the idea to utilize a 5% solution. Unfortunately because we are utilizing vodka which is only 40% alcohol the highest concentration we can dissolve is 2.5%. In all likelyhood this is probably a high enough concentration to work just as well as the 5% version. If you still want to utilize a 5% solution I would recommend applying the 2.5% formula, wait a minute or two and then apply it again.

It is a simple brew to make. All you need to do is mix the appropriate amount of azelaic acid in the vodka and allow enough time for it to dissolve. Shaking it occassionally will speed up the process. If you wish to make 4 ounces of a 2.5% solution (a very liberal one month supply) you would simply add 3 grams of azelaic acid to 4 ounces of ethly alcohol. Then just give it 60-90 minutes to dissolve. The problem for most people will be in determining how much of the azelaic acid powder (more like flakes than a powder) equals 3 grams. If you have a gram scale you have no problem. Just measure out 3 grams and mix it with your 4 ounces of vodka. If you do not, all you really need is a one ounce clear plastic medicine cup. Those who order the azelaic acid from me will receive with it a clear measuring cup. If you fill the medicine cup to the 5cc or 5ml line that will be about 3 grams of azelaic acid flakes. Then just dump it in your bottle that contains 4 ounces of vodka. It will not mix immediately but will dissolve within 60-90 minutes. As soon as it is completely dissolved it is ready to apply to your scalp.

It is best to apply the AA with an eye dropper. Apply a thin coat to all areas you wish to treat. Using one hand apply a drop or two to an area of your scalp and immediately when the drop hits your scalp use tha finger on your other hand to quickly rub it around before it rolls off your scalp. Proceed in this fashion until you have covered all the scalp surfaces you wish to treat. Upon completion wait a minute or two for it to dry before applying the Super Zix formula.

Be prepared the first few times you apply the AA. It tends to cause a "flushing" and itching of the scalp. In my experience this effect will gradually diminish as you keep using the substance over days and weeks. The first time you apply it though it can be somewhat distressing because you may not understand what is happening. The flushing and itching usually subsides within a few minutes after applying it however in some individuals it can last for several hours. To be on the safe side you may want to apply the AA the first time to a small area and see how you tolerate it. Then gradually increase the area you apply it to.
